One of the most interesting places to get real-time commentary and news about anything is on Twitter. Engineering is no exception.

But are you following the right streams?

Your Twitter experience is a reflection of who you follow, so to make it easier and more rewarding for you – here’s a list of 24 engineering Twitter streams you should follow.


Engineering Twitter Streams: The Obvious Ones

@NASA – Why should you follow them? Because there is nothing cooler than space and the people that make it tangible for the rest of us.

@MarsCuriosity – This twitter account posts updates and photographs from the Mars Rover.

@IEEESpectrum – The Spectrum, a publication by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, explores development, applications and the implications of new technologies.

@neiltyson – Is an astrophysicist at Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the host of StarTalk Radio. (And has over 930,000 followers!)

@Engineeringcom – The Twitter home of Engineering.com, an online engineering magazine.

@donttrythis – Adam Savage’s twitter account. You may know him as the host of Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel.


Engineer Twitter Streams: Deeper Cuts

@engineer4change – An organization of engineers and community leaders attempting to solve challenges and share knowledge to improve the quality of life all over the world.

@Make – Twitter home of Make magazine, it focuses on do it yourself (DIY) projects involving computers, electronics, robotics, metalworking, woodworking and other disciplines. Amateur engineers, unite!

@CERN – the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known for being the biggest particle physics laboratory in the world.

@TheScienceGuy – Bill Nye! Science educator extraordinaire.

@AstroRobonaut – A humanoid robot designed to work side by side with humans, or go where the risks are too great for people… tweeting from the International Space Station.

@ASCETweets –  The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

@TheIET – The Institution of Engineering and Technology is Europe’s largest group of engineers & technicians.

@SWEtalk – The Society of Women Engineers has been giving women engineers a unique place and voice within the engineering industry for over six decades. Now that voice is on Twitter, too.

@NSBE – The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) strives to “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”


The Most Entertaining Engineering Twitter Streams

@SarcasticRover – “I’m on Mars, whoop-dee-fricken-doo. Not the real @MarsCuriosity.” Parody account speaks from the rover about NASA, Mars, and the mission there.

@EngineersHumor – Engineering humor. Their tagline? “Work hard. Laugh harder.”

@engineerproblem – Very student-centric, but still hilarious. “Did my homework in radians instead of degrees! #engineeringproblems”
