Where the Engineering Jobs Are

Where the Engineering Jobs Are: July 2015

July 21, 2015

This quarter, we mine our online jobs database to rank states by engineering jobs per capita and pinpoint the most in-demand disciplines in your area.

While nearly every discipline shrank over the second quarter, year-on-year growth is positive in most STEM job categories and regions in the US.

States with the Most Engineering Jobs

Ranking states by per capita jobs, rather than raw job counts, shakes up the top ten quite a bit. While states with the highest raw totals are the most populated – and target rich – the per capita number of engineering jobs is a better indicator of STEM employment activity within the state.

Top Engineering Jobs per 1000

Per capita rankings are not without their own artifacts, of course. (DC’s small census population and centrality to a thriving metro area make it seem, on paper, to host 20x the STEM jobs as Massachusetts and more than the top 30 states, combined; we omitted it from these rankings.)
Notable changes this quarter include:

  • Alaska and South Dakota lost a quarter of their engineering jobs in q2 2015. While this still puts South Dakota ahead of q2 2014, engineering jobs in Alaska are down 11% year-on-year.
  • Idaho, Puerto Rico, and New Mexico lead in year-on-year growth as a percentage of their STEM workforce.
  • California, New York, and Virginia lead in raw number of new engineering jobs.

Hottest Engineering Jobs by Discipline

Studying the number of available positions in the various disciplines is a useful career positioning tool, but really only takes you so far; it’s difficult to imagine technological civilization without a massive electrical and mechanical engineering presence, while systems thinking only becomes more necessary as time goes on.

Top Engineering Jobs This Quarter

Some career positioning notes we can draw from this quarter’s numbers:

  • While Mining dropped by 30% this quarter, it retained ~45% more jobs than this time last year. Commodity-driven sectors are incredibly volatile; if you want to get in on boomtime salaries, be ready to tighten your belt with market shifts.
  • Biomedical engineering – arguably the most interesting discipline on the board – continues to grow at a steady pace. While barriers for entry are high, this will be a very, very interesting field in the coming decade. Students should strongly consider it.
  • Network engineering experienced the highest sustained annual and quarterly growth in a major discipline.
