What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated Electronics Technologist with a diverse skillset to support the development and production of high reliability custom magnetics products to meet national security needs. Your focus will be hands-on electrical testing, prototyping, and characterization (e.g. visual, mechanical, thermal) of our custom magnetics products to understand their performance relative to functional requirements in specified field environments. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively on our high-performing product development team. You will be responsible for maintaining and continuously improving all lab equipment, 6S organization, and safety practices that our team relies upon for project success.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Interface with the product development team, US-based suppliers, electrical test engineers, etc. to develop and execute test plans
Set up and perform specialized tests, which include high voltage testing, use of oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, and other electrical test gear
Process and document test results
Wind magnetic prototypes for development programs as well as advanced and exploratory work
Fabricate and assemble mechanical and electromechanical systems
Lead laboratory safety, laboratory ownership (e.g. equipment calibration, 6S organization), and associated documentation efforts

Qualifications We Require

Associate's degree in Electronics or four years of equivalent relevant experience
Experience using electronics equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, and various meters)
Experience with fabrication including the use of hand tools
Ability to travel to US-based suppliers on a regular basis (10-30% yearly)
Ability to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering plus two years of relevant experience
Experience prototyping and testing of high reliability custom magnetic components
Experience working with and troubleshooting high voltage components, systems, or testers
Experience using LabVIEW or other instrument control language
Experience with lab ownership, lab safety, and/or associated documentation
Experience executing 6S principles
Experience updating, releasing, and maintaining ND product definition with configuration management
Ability to learn new technical areas
Leadership experience
Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance
A strong commitment to safety, security, quality, and program success

About Our Team

The High Reliability Custom Technologies department designs and develops custom capacitors and magnetics (transformers of various types, inductors, solenoid coils, etc.) for nuclear weapons and other national security applications. The department covers the complete product realization cycle including requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery, and stockpile support. We work closely with our partners at the Kansas City National Security Campus, the Sandia External Production program, and our suppliers to realize product. We support our customers by providing innovative designs, production techniques, and hardware for new programs while continuing the development, production, and surveillance of current and legacy components. We are advancing new technologies for next generation product insertion opportunities. Defect-prevention strategies are engrained in our work and design margins are quantified. There are multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size and weight restrictions. Our labs are well equipped and have the capabilities to do specialized testing.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
