Position Summary:
The Principal R&D Engineer position oversees engineering projects in the research, design, and development of medical devices in the Development department in support of the Development department objectives to provide goods and services that meet customers’ requirements for quality, quantity, and timeliness. The primary goal of the Principal R&D Engineer is to lead technical efforts with project engineers, technicians, and assemblers to conduct development projects on time and on-budget that meet the customer’s objectives, bringing the projects to successful conclusions that meet all the clients’ objectives. The Principal R&D Engineer will contribute to design and problem solving, provide guidance to projects, and guide engineers to work towards successful project deliverables and meeting the expectations of clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and engineer disposable medical devices from concept to production
- Hands-on product and process development of catheter and other disposable products
- Design devices in SolidWorks and build prototypes in a laboratory environment
- Design, prototype, and construct catheters, catheter-based delivery systems, and other disposable devices for disciplines ranging from cardiology and neurology to urology
- Communicate to the customer any issues and the status of the project
- Prepare and support product development and quality planning (project schedule, resources, and budgets, etc.)
- Participate in the quotation process for projects
- Develop feasibility and reliability testing plans for catheter systems, including the development of accurate in-vitro and in-vivo models and methods
- Develop pilot and manufacturing equipment and procedures for devices
- Support product manufacturing until project is fully transitioned to production
- Manage and assist with verification and validation activities and documentation
- Collaborate with outside vendors on the sourcing of catheter materials, components, and processing
- Prepare documentation to support quality system for design functions (project plans, concept document, FMEA, design input, test results, drawings, etc.)
- Mentor the Engineering staff and provide guidance where needed to assist in project needs, develop team skills, and coach through best practices
- Identify opportunities for training and skills development for the Engineering staff
- Communicate any team needs, challenges, or suggested changes to Senior Management
- Participate in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of team members
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering is required
- 8 or more years of experience in medical device development
- Technical skills must include disposable design and development background, materials knowledge, and prototyping
- Project management experience is required to plan and conduct complex development projects
- US and International Regulatory requirements, quality management systems requirements, and varied medical device applications experience is highly preferred for understanding of project requirements
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential
- Excellent computer skills needed include Microsoft Office or equivalent applications
