Founded in 1977, J.W. Design & Construction has been serving the Central Coast with commercial construction projects, including hotels, wineries, mixed-use buildings, retail establishments, agricultural coolers, shopping centers, auto dealership facilities and many other commercial projects. Today, we have built and completed more large-scale projects than any other builder on the Central Coast.
Working in conjunction with the Project Manager and Construction Superintendent, the office, design team, sub-contractors and the job site, the Project Engineer will assist to oversee the daily management of the project, and to ensure that the project requirements are met and completed on time and within budget.
Duties / Responsibilities:
Preconstruction and Bidding: Review plans and specifications to determine entire scope of the project for bidding, understanding as much about what is in the project documents as what is not.
Plan Review/Document Control: Review plans, specifications, and subcontractor scopes as written by the Project Manager to determine entire scope of the project and its scheduling requirements for subcontractors, materials and labor in order to acquire a thorough working knowledge of the project documents; understanding as much about what is in the project documents as what is not.
Scheduling: Assist the Superintendent with the weekly updates of 4 week-look-ahead schedules to be shared with Project Manager and subcontractors onsite during the weekly meeting. Weekly meeting to be mandatory for all subcontractor foreman onsite.
Reporting: Assist the Superintendent in logging all scopes of work with photographs before work is covered up. This includes any underground, in-wall MEP’s, insulation, etc. Photos to be logged into Procore into the appropriate files. Attaching photos to the daily report is not acceptable.
Procurement: Assist the PM and Superintendent in reviewing lead times for materials based on approved submittals as well as submittals in process, throughout the entire project. Present any conflicts or possible delays to PM. This is critical to completing the project on schedule. If there are clear conflicts in lead times, work with subcontractors and suppliers to propose an alternative material / product.
Communication: Assist the PM and Superintendent in consulting with clients, design professionals, subcontractors, and vendors regarding issues, clarifications, and RFI’s. Communications must be documented either through phone calls that are documented on a daily report, or email correspondence. All emails, documents, mark-ups to be proof read and free of any grammatical or spelling errors.
Changes to the Work: All changes to the contract documents must be approved through the architect and Ownership, as well as AHJ when appropriate. No work is to be performed that has any impact on cost without Ownership’s written approval. This may be done through an “additional work authorization” or if time allows, a PCO. Assist the PM in getting scope of changes to subcontractors and getting costing back from subcontractors.
Daily Activities: Assist the Superintendent with inspecting the work and overall site conditions several times daily with a notebook and iPhone capable of taking pictures within Procore. Any safety, constructability issues, or deviations from the plans should be documented and disperses to the appropriate subcontractors for their review. Follow through any communication needed with architect or AHJ until the issue has been resolved. Document all issues within Procore on daily report and “issues log.”
