Principal Electrical Engineer
The Principal Electrical Engineer at Proficio Consultancy will carry out electrical and control systems engineering design work for our projects for various clients across the process industries, including refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, and alternative fuels. Responsibility will include collecting and preparing data/information and performing detailed engineering designs and calculations. The Principal Electrical Engineer will work closely with inter-disciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, instrumentation, process, piping, etc.) as well as our valued clients.
Responsibilities
- Prepare formal electrical calculations for equipment sizing and selection (cable, bus, and transformer sizing and selection, LV/MV equipment sizing and selection for MCCs and Switchgear)
- Prepare electrical and control cabling block diagrams to assist the electrical / controls designer in creating detailed drawings for single line diagrams, power distribution, motor controls, control panels, and instrumentation wiring.
- Interact directly with Clients
- Interact with 3rd parties such as equipment suppliers
- Carry out field investigations and walk-downs of existing systems
- Work on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects.
- Design complete electrical solutions based on project scope definition.
- Prepare project documentation including but not limited to bills of material, calculations, data sheets, detailed drawings, specifications, technical reports, and test plans.
- Coordinate tasks with engineers, designers, and administrative staff.
- Perform technical evaluation of bids and recommend best value design that meets client requirements for operability, reliability, maintainability, and safety.
- Lead field work by checking installations and problem-solving activities.
- Perform vendor drawing reviews.
- Serve as Project Lead for single-discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing the scope of work, making staffing recommendations, and checking drawings. Will seal drawings as required for projects under responsible charge.
- Interact with other disciplines and suppliers to obtain pertinent information.
- Manage the project scope, address scope and work changes, adjust the project deliverables as necessary, and complete the project work based on the budget and scheduled time frame.
- Present project information to both internal and external client audiences.
- Work within given budget and schedule parameters and develop internal time estimates for engineering and design.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a similar degree from an accredited school is required.
- 10+ years of electrical, control systems, and instrumentation wiring design experience in a consulting organization.
- Professional Engineer license or willingness to work toward professional licensure.
- Robust skill set in understanding single lines and schematic diagrams and P&IDs.
- Understanding of IEC and NEC standards.
- Broad industry experience in greenfield and brownfield projects.
- Experience in power distribution, hardware specifications, power system modeling, control systems, and hardware interfacing for projects in the process industries.
- Technical understanding applicable to the design of lighting, grounding, and (MV/LV) distribution and control systems.
- Relevant experience in developing cable tray and duct bank routing design.
- Ability to perform power modelling and arc flash analysis using Easy Power, ETAP, and SKM software.
- Experience with control panel design and UL standards for designing and building control panels.
- Working knowledge of Navisworks and AutoCAD.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail abilities.
- Ability to multitask and organize for project efficiency.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Basic experience with AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and Navisworks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Desire and willingness to conduct field investigations and walk downs in plant environment
- Solid Microsoft Office Skills
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC) applicable codes and standards
- Must have permanent work authorization in U.S.
- Proficio has offices in Lisle, IL and Palatine, IL. Working location for this position is available at either office location.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
