What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the R&D Engineer 2/ R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Be part of an amazing value stream analyst engineering team here at the nation's Plutonium Center of Excellence that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for the plutonium facility. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop, and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly support the execution of manufacturing of weapon components, the surveillance of weapon components and materials in the nuclear stockpile, and other national security missions.
R&D Engineer 2 -($99,200 - $164,100)
As an R&D Engineer 2, you will be expected to demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects; you will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to understand their processes and collect data to develop value stream maps for the processes. You will be expected to get familiar with Industrial Engineering models to conduct simulations with them under the supervision of more experienced staff. You will be expected to work with various process teams whose members have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. Prior knowledge/certification in lean manufacturing principles, statistical quality control techniques, and Six Sigma methodologies are highly desirable.
R&D Engineer 3 ($119,200 - $201,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as an R&D Engineer 3, you will be expected to be able to perform all duties of R&D Engineer 2. Additionally, the R&D Industrial Engineer (IE) level 3 develops and/or contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. You will champion change efforts and make presentations to upper management at various points of the change study. You will lead technical development of proposals and actively mentor, coach, and train junior staff. You will be expected to provide develop solutions to complex IE problems involving labor, space, and technological issues under multiple constraints arising from resource availability, safety, and regulatory requirements. A thorough knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines and designing, planning and execution of process improvement projects.
You may be asked to develop KPI strategies, KPIs and metrics, developing/applying simulation models, and tracking systems to improve and monitor processes. Prior industry experience is also highly desirable, particularly in an environment where safety and regulatory compliance are of paramount importance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge and proven experience in engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures and equipment to the improvement and production of specialized manufacturing and manufacturing processes.
Project Management: Primarily for R&D Engineer 3 position - Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects and strong experience in solution development and implementation. Experience leading cross-functional projects.
Process Improvement: Primarily for R&D Engineer 3 position - Demonstrated ability to apply process improvement and problem-solving techniques including, but not limited to Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to address issues such as operational and quality process improvement. Helps in developing a Lean Six Sigma organization, driven to improve performance, cost, throughput, and quality control metrics.
Communication Skills: Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels. Having strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work and influence cross-functionally.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications:

Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification from an accredited institution is highly desired, particularly for the R&D Engineer 3 position.

Experience coaching and mentoring Green Belts, Black Belt candidates, project teams, and production personnel, particularly for the R&D Engineer 3 position.

Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality

requirements.

Experience in process improvement, process engineering, or industrial engineering.

Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis. Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.

Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.

Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.

Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
