In this role, you will be responsible for the design, evaluation, and application of engineering judgment to analyze aboveground storage tanks, appurtenances and structural attachments, foundations, and other details related to our projects. We value innovative, appropriate, cost-effective designs, drawings, and specifications, and the ability to devise new approaches to solve problems. You will work closely with our customers and design drafting group to prepare calculations and ensure designs comply with the applicable codes and standards, accepted engineering practices, and TF Warren standards. You will stamp documents prepared by you or those under your supervision as a professional engineer or be near to obtaining professional licensure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Analyze bolted aboveground storage tanks complying to AWWA D103, NFPA-22, Factory Mutual, and other tank standards
- Know- or research- and apply relevant codes and standards, such as ASCE 7, IBC, NFPA, and OSHA
- Understanding of various authorities of having jurisdiction
- Analyze structural attachments and supports such as walkways, platforms, pipe and other supports
- Recommend fabrication and field construction friendly solutions when sizing members and determining connection details
- Generate sketches as required convey structural sizing to design drafting
- Produce tank loads and design calculations as needed
- Review, approve, and seal design packages, calculations, and other technical details
- Organize, draft, and implement technical standards
- Prepare design criteria for projects with clear, complete, concise structural criteria including calculations and specifications
- Participate in bid and model (design) reviews when requested
- Perform construction site visits and prepare inspection reports documenting observations
- Provide timely engineering solutions for fabrication and construction related problems
- Prepare and/or review all structural related testing and inspection reports
- Help cultivate a culture of learning through both mentoring and learning from other engineers
- Maintain a strong code of ethics and professionalism
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed
Competencies:
- Civil engineering theories, procedures, and methods
- Stress analysis of civil structures
- Analysis of thin shell plate vessels
- Classical analysis (“hand calcs”) and FEA methods
- Comfortable with 2D and 3D CAD software
- Ability to read and interpreting 2D drawings
- Working with multiple-discipline projects
- Proficiency with STAAD, Excel, Word, Outlook, and manipulating 3D models for inspection
- VBA programming a plus
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering from ABET accredited program required
- Structural emphasis (Master’s) or relevant experience and coursework (Bachelor’s)
- 5 or more years of related experience preferred
- Tank experience desired, either bolted or welded
- PE License strongly desired
